How much do putting greens cost?

There’s no one size fits all answer to this because there’s no single way to build a putting green. Everyone’s needs, space constraints, and design ideas tally up to create a unique experience, every time. Plus, it will also depend on the complexity of the installation. Whether you’re looking for some small hills, bunkers, or just a flat green to work on your putting game, each of these requires their own level of precision to get done right.

Synthetic turf designed especially for golf grass can run, on average, between $100-150 /m2 per square metre. For a green sized 75m2, you’re looking at a rough cost of $9,500 including profill sand, installation, and accessories. If you’re interested in something larger to practice your chip shots and that includes a bunker, you’re looking at costs that are closer to $20,000.

How long does it take to install a putting green?

Again, that might depend largely on what size you choose to have installed in the first place. Complexity can add time to any project, putting greens not excluded.

That said, normal construction times can take anywhere from 2-3 days. This includes leveling the surface (or creating undulations as needed), adding borders, laying the underlayment, installing the turf, adding the profill sand, and finalising any accessories including cups and flag pins

Can I install a putting green myself?

There are a lot of different steps involved in installing a putting green as you can see from the above list. However, it is possible for you to attempt to install your own if you are feeling ambitious. Remember that preparation of the surface area is key not just for a smooth putting experience but also for proper drainage in the rest of your garden. If you aren’t sure how to manage this, you might prefer to go with a professional installer.

Installation also requires a number of steps to ensure that the green itself is in place properly. Some DIY kits may come with plastic sheeting that you can affix the turf to, but these systems tend to be unwieldy and degrade over time. You’ll want to be sure to clear the area of all grass and dirt, create a level base, and then follow any instructions you receive from your turf provider in order to ensure a proper install.

Frequently Asked Questions About Putting Greens in Brisbane & Gold Coast

How long do they last?

When installed properly and professionally, you can expect your artificial turf to last a minimum of 10-15 years. While most manufacturers will only provide warranties between 7-12 years from installation, you can expect to get a long life out of your green especially if you take great care of it.

What do I have to do to maintain it?

One of the great things about synthetic turf is that you have little to no maintenance to worry about once it’s installed. Rinsing your green with the gentle flow from a garden hose or using a leaf blower is one way to keep it clear of debris and any other build up that might find its way onto the surface. For edging grass and longer turf, you may want to brush the grasses against the grain to cut down on the visibility of traffic marks like footprints and divots.

What about weeds?

Again, if it’s installed properly, one of the steps can be to include a weed barrier that separates the ground and the turf from one another. Some underlayments already include this element. In either case, you should not have to worry about weeds popping up in the middle of your putting green.

Will it fade in the strong Australian sun?

Not at all. Artificial turf is made of materials that have UV protection built into them so that they will be fade resistant. That means your green should stay green for years to come!
